Princess Mary of Cambridge was born in Hanover, Germany on 27 November 1833 as Mary Adelaide Wilhelmina Elizabeth, the daughter of Prince Adolphus, Duke of Cambridge, a son of George III. She was, therefore, a first cousin of Queen Victoria. She had a love of food and a tendency to overeat, which led to her being called "Fat Mary". The Southwell Brothers seem to have disguised this in the photograph with modest success.

Her appearance caused a lack of suitors, and she was still unmarried at the age of 30. Eventually a willing suitor was found in Prince Francis of Teck, and they were married on 12 June 1866 at St Anne's Church, Kew, Surrey. There were four children, the eldest of whom, Princess Victoria Mary of Teck, married Prince George, Duke of York, who was later crowned George V of the United Kingdom.

Mary never saw her daughter crowned Queen, as she died on 27 October 1897 at White Lodge, Richmond Park.
